How To Minimize Dust In Camp

When you’re camping and it’s dry and dusty, it seems like dust gets into everything. You’ve not going to be able to shut it out completely and you’ll have to accept that, but there are ways to keep the dust down, at least a little. If you’ve got water to spare, there’s no better way of keeping your campsite dust down. Just sprinkle some water around the campsite and keep sprinkling it every so often. Unfortunately, most dusty campsites don’t have water to spare. The easiest thing you can do to keep the dust out of your tent or RV is to close every window in your tent and RV and keep it closed. You’ll also have to cut down on the number of times you enter your tent or RV. Neither tents nor RVs are completely dustproof, but fewer openings and closings mean a lot less dust in your tent or RV.That also goes for vent openings on RVs. Of course, you don’t want to seal them right off. You need the air! But you can cover them with filters and tape the seal around the filters. Remember to turn off your hot water heater before covering that vent!It also helps to keep your dusty clothing and shoes outside the tent, but here you’ve got to remember that dusty territory is also usually scorpion territory. Placing empty shoes outside a tent in scorpion territory is just asking for trouble. So put your shoes and clothing into a clean garbage bag and tie it off, it doesn’t have to be tight but it does have to close the opening and make it impossible for scorpions to get in.You really don’t want dust to get in your bedding if you can help it. Here’s another place where those garbage bags come in handy. After you get up in the morning, roll up your bedding, pop it in a garbage bag, and tie off the top.If your bedding’s just too big for that kind of thing, cover it from head to foot with a sheet or tarp after you get up each morning. Remove the sheet or tarp carefully and fold it up, dusty side in, when you’re ready for bed. Make sure you remember which side is which! In dusty conditions, garbage bags are also essential for anything small and electronic. If dust ever gets inside those things, they’ll never work properly again. For electrical stuff you can’t put in garbage bags, there’s tape. That even goes for wall switches. Whenever you’re not using it, tape it off!No matter how hard you try, you know some dust’s going to get by you. If it’s sand-size, just sweep it out the door with the help of a dust pan. If it’s driving you crazy, give the surface a quick wipe with water and vinegar. Otherwise, promise yourself that you’ll give the place a thorough cleaning when you get back, and try hard to put it out of your mind until then.
